
Bio
Gavin Goodrich is a composer and concert pianist whose works synthesize pure mathematics, Vipassana Meditation, and visual arts. He is a Washington State and New York based composer with commissions from the Ekmeles, International Contemporary Ensemble, and Vibraphone Project Inc. Born in an Alaskan fishing community, he taught himself piano, composition, and mathematics from YouTube videos before receiving a scholarship to study mathematics and music at Columbia University, where he graduated with honors this past Spring. Under the advisement of Georg Friedrich Haas, his senior thesis focused on developing mathematical systems for applying 15th-century Franco-Flemish polyphonic composition techniques into microtonal systems. Gavin is a master's student at Shepherd School of Music in composition. His research involves creating artificial intelligences to study Rennaissance mensuration canons.
Gavin also has a passion for teaching. He taught English, music, and philosophy in Galicia, Spain on a Fulbright Grant. He also designed curricula and taught high school math and music at Spring Street International School. As a member of Columbia University’s Symposium, he created and led seminars for Peruvian and Pakistani high schools with particular emphases on Ancient Greek and Indian theater. In his spare time, Gavin enjoys solving higher dimensional Rubik’s Cubes and is currently internationally ranked for solving both 4 and 5 dimensional puzzles.
